Christian tradition has always carried two “stories” about God. One story has told of human isolation from God because of a “Fall,” the “theological story” of Jesus who won access to God in heaven. The other story has been carried by the mystics and pointed to by theologians reminding us that “God” is an everywhere reality beyond all human concepts and images. Jesus is revealer of this Presence in which we live and move and have our being.

The goal of prayer is to deepen our awareness of this Presence and to challenge us to give the best possible human expression to it. We will use the contemporary “story” about our universe and our place in it to deepen awareness and appreciation of God’s universal presence, to reflect on the role of Jesus as revealer of this Presence always with us, and to examine the implications for prayer and liturgy.

SCHEDULE

Friday evening (Nov. 19): The Contemporary “Universe Story”
This talk will situate “our place” in the larger universe story to deepen awareness and appreciation of God’s universal presence. This will include examining the patterns at work in the universe for growth and life and point anew to the mystery we call “God”.
Saturday morning (Nov. 20): Friday evening’s theme will continue into Saturday morning and lead into reflection on Jesus as revealer of the Divine Presence always with us. We will reflect on Jesus as someone who gives human expression to this Presence at work in the universe rather than someone who gained human access to a heavenly deity. We will reflect on the heart of Jesus’ preaching – the “kingdom of God” and on Jesus’ readiness to die for what he believed.
Saturday afternoon/Sunday am (Nov. 21): We will reflect on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Resurrection, and Pentecost all in the light of Friday night and Saturday morning’s reflections. The implications and practicalities for prayer and liturgy today will also be examined. Sunday Eucharist included.
